Assignment #1

February 18, 2008

Through The Geography of Slavery, I noticed how slaves might lived their lives and why would they escaped.

I found 3 examples of Ads on escaped slaves.  I have found these ads by browse the Ads and looked for the local as Virginia and fairfax county, fairfax. It was very interesting because it happened in our local place and there were many slaves who were escaped from their “master”.

1. Virginia Gazette (parks), Williamsburg, From May 2 to May 9, 1745

“Servant Woman, named Isabella Pierce: of a middle stature, thin Visage, limps with her right Leg, which if examin’d, will appear to be a large Scar on each Side of the Ankle of her said Leg: She has stole from the Subscriber two Gold Rings, a Silver Stock-buckel, and about six pounds cash.”

I was wondering why she would have scars on her body and limps her leg. I assumed that she had tough life with her master. I would imagine her master was abusing her and she could not handle that abusiveness so she might thought of running away. Or I can assume that she tried to run away couple of times and she failed so her master abused her leg so she limps.

2. Maryland Gazette (Green), Annapolis, June 21, 1745

This example of slave is same slave as first one. I guess they kept failed to find Isabella Pierce, so Subscriber decided to raise the reward price, which was very interesting.
3. Virginia Gazette (Rind),  Williamsburg, May 12, 1768.

It was about Negro Man named Jack Yarmouth, about 40 years old, a low squat made fellow he has lost two of his fore teeth, and is by trade a gardener.

As the first one, I would imagine with this one too that he is also abused by the master?! I can’t think of anything with positiveness.

I believe these ads and the Wikipedia articles tell  us that so much information or beyond about slaves and how they lived and the relationships with masters. I got so much ideas from these Ads, because with description on slaves, how they dressed and description on physical explained so much. Wikipedia articles on Slavery was explained about what they were working on and even children were working for the masters. I believe slavery is just sad and terrible thing that happened in history.

first lesson…

First of all, I’m very impressed that I did not fall in asleep in history class. WOW! To be honest, history is really boring to learn about because it is all about facts and nothing interests me. It doesn’t come to me because I wasn’t there. It is just a long time ago story. But again, it really impressed me how prof. Boggs teaches us with Wiki articles, images and actually discussing with it. I am much visual learner so it is helpful to learn and it was fun to look at the map and find out what was wrong and what was different from today. After I saw that map, I thought it was unrealistic because I saw those kind of maps in cartoons or in the movies.

I thought the articles of slaves are very interested me too especially, child labor because my concentration is on early childhood education and I tend to focusing on child labor and it is very sad how little children got sold so that they can get to paid their debts. It was shocking that their parents are selling their kids to prevent starvation. I thought it was insane how parents do not protect their kids instead sell them. Maybe their parents did not have any choice?! because they don’t have power to fight against high class people. Again, I thought it was very interesting to read different kinds of slaves there were and what kind of work they were put up with.

About myself…

February 4, 2008

My life started in Korea, 1986; I came to America when I was in fifteen. I started from Elementary school through now, which I still cannot believe that I’m in college approaching my goal, to become a teacher. It was my dream to become a teacher ever since when I was young. I love children and whenever I am with children, it gives me energy and pursues my happiness. I’m very passionate about my dream to be come true.  College made me to step on to the real world little by little. I started work after I got into college, at first, I wanted to earn money and get independent from my parents at least earn my allowance myself. But what I realize that there was more important than money. I’ve met a lot of people and being very actively, socially involved. Also, I’ve learned that it is not that easy to earn money than spending. So I learned saving my money and I learned to use money wisely (as my parents always said and I realize parents are NEVER wrong!). So I decided to travel. My first trip without my family was to go to Peru, South America. It was very unforgettable journey. I met wonderful people and had a good time which it will stay in my heart forever.
Sometimes I look back and I realize again that life goes on. In some point, I will look back again and when I do, I wish I’ve enjoy my life with no regrets!  Peru
