Reflection#7

As last class discussed about advertising, I believe advertising effects people in what they do and how they do it.

And I think when advertisers plan their strategies for the sale of a certain product, they look at who would use the item. If the product was make-up, the type of person that would use it would most likely be a woman, around the age of thirteen and up. The advertisers would then find an ideal looking woman to
model for ads to show the makeup on a person and try to get women to use it. The way that the advertisers describe the model will also get your attention; they might say that she is not really beautiful until she puts on the makeup, or something along those lines. I think Advertising is an effective method of public
relations communication for several reasons.

From last class’s lecture, Roosevelt simply acted in the interests of the common working man, fixing things that they found unjust. For years, the poor and immigrants were unhappy with treatment from their big-business employers. Their long working hours and exploitation of children were, among other things, exposed by the Muckrakers.  When I was doing the research for my wikipedia article, I found out something about progressivism and I found out more about the Muckrakers. The Muckrakers were journalists who exposed corruption in business and politics and made many of their readers angry.  These new reformers took over the old Populist idea that the government should work for the public’s economic well being.

Also, we talked about the impacts on child labor, women’s suffrage, and worker’s rights. Civil rights for African-Americans and women was just beginning to become an issue in the late 19th century.  Many progressivists spoke out for suffrage for women and equal rights for black people.  And I believe, today, civil rights for minorities is still a big cause for reform.  However, I think civil rights is just one of the many causes of modern reform groups.

Why are the Irish so lucky? What is a leprechaun? Is there really gold at the end of a rainbow? And why does everyone drink green beer on St. Patrick’s Day? These questions all have one thing in common, they are myths from the Emerald Isle we all call Ireland.

The island of Ireland is a divided island, not by physical boundaries, but religious ones. Over 95% of the people in Ireland are Roman Catholic, followed by 3-4% Protestant. The reason that Ireland is primarily Catholic is because of the work done by St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick was captured at the age of 16 by Celtic warriors and forced into slavery in Northern Ireland where he tended sheep. Because of his situation he became very religious and when he escaped six years later, he went back to England to become a priest. Fifteen years later, Patrick was sent back to Ireland, this time by the Pope, to take the position of bishop. Within 30 years, Patrick had successfully converted most of the Druid Irish to Christianity. He is said to have used a 3 leafed clover, known as a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish people, this is why the shamrock is still known today as a good luck charm all over the world. Along with this, Patrick established over 300 churches and personally baptized over 100,000 people. One myth about St. Patrick was that he chased all the snakes out of Ireland. This has two meanings. The first is that the snake represented the devil and as he traveled the country spreading Christianity he chased the
‘devil’ out of the people. The other meaning is that the snake represented the paganism practiced in Druidism. Irish all over the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, the day he died. Today, with this myth and history behind it, did not change over time to stereotype Irish people. Irish people being Irish, also get to hear about all of the stereotypes that are cast down upon Irish people. drink a lot of beers, they like potatoes, corned beef, and cabbage. Especially, the Irish have been associated with the little leprechauns. He is the funny looking little guy that searches for gold at the end of the rainbow and brings good luck.

Even though its been over 2,000 years since the first Celt came to Ireland, the legends, myths and customs still live on. No one knows if the Irish are a lucky people, why leprechauns are supposedly at the end of rainbows, or why vast amounts of green beer are consumed on St. Patrick’s day, all that the Irish know is that their people, religion, and Celtic backgrounds have gotten them through the worst of times, and they are very proud to be able to pass them on to many generations to come.

Since last class, we talked about immigrations, I think the concept of immigration into the United States of America refers to the movement of non-residents to the United States. It has been a major source of population growth and cultural change throughout much of the American history even though the foreign born have never been more than fifteen percent of the population since around the year 1600’s?!  The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding race, ethnicity, religion, economic benefits, job growth, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility and levels of criminality, nationalities, political loyalties, and moral values in America and in our society today.

Last class, we learned about Jim Crow law and I think this law is about power.  Power of one race over another.  These laws really highlight the flaws and weakness of human nature.  One group of people asserting power over another for the pride and vanity of a system of politics that had been defeated at the cost of thousands of American lives during the civil war.
The term “Jim Crow” has its origins of interest also.  The interpretation was intended to ridicule the African American by white American’s in the position of power. It was very interesting how the Jim Crow laws were initiated after the civil war during the deconstruction of the new south and they help to create a racial caste system in the American South. These laws were protected by the constitution and  were a form of constitutional racism. Also, it was good to know that when the Supreme Court ruled on Plessy v. Ferguson the Federal Government legalized racism but under the guise of a doctrine referred to as “separate but equal”.   The Jim Crow laws were in place until the Supreme Court of 1954 threw them out with it’s ruling on Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka. This court had a different opinion of equality.

I read this book few weeks ago about Civil war, and I found out that soon after the Reconstruction, African Americans and whites Americans ate in the same restaurants, often rode together in the same railway cars, used the same public facilities, but did not often interact as equals. The development of large black communities in urban areas and the significant black labor force in factories presented a new challenge to white Southerners. They could not control these new communities in the same informal ways they had been able to control rural black Americans, which were more directly dependent on white landowners and merchants (sharecropping system) than their urban counterparts. In the city, blacks and whites were in more direct competition than they had been in the countryside. There was more danger of social mixing. The city, therefore, required different, and more rigidly institutionalized, systems of control, henceforth Jim Crow laws. The Jim Crow laws were a response to the new reality that required the white supremacy to move to where it would have a more rigid legal and institutional basis to retain control over the black population.

It was good to know these history backgrounds. I mean, obviously I’m not a history person but these facts helps me to understand the concept of it better in class.

Watching different scene of the several movies on Civil war, gave me a tactic on each movie. There were so many conflict views on wars, which it divides to North and South. It was very interesting in this particular scene on Cold Mountatin that one of the Union guy was keep saying “I just wanted food, we were starving, we never had food for days…” I don’t know. In my perspective, this scene was very interesting because Union seemed always the strong and bad ones.

I intend to show through following reading assignment article the concept of civil war and how it applies to the modern times. War is the greatest plague that afflicts humanity, it destroys religion, it destroys states. Talking about civil society, wish has been defined as a concept located strategically at the cross section of important strands of intellectual developments in the social sciences. A society entrained with the principles of integrity and justice can be regarded as a civic society.
Civil war has been defined by many sources but the definition put forward by the United States military states that,”war between factions of the same country; The five standards of identifying this status internationally is that: The contestants must own the territory and have a performing government in there, must be recognized by other nations, have recognized military armed forces and have engaged in military operations in the past.
Taking this definition into account we can very well comprehend that a civil war is fought within a country and between citizens of that country and the goal is one i.e. to gain political standing. Now what are the world wide causes of civil war? It might be gross injustice or it might be an attitude of stubbornness shown by one party or the other.

Assignment #2 Utopia Z

March 3, 2008 by soohyunie

The function of work in a Utopia Z can be summed up in one basic idea. People work to benefit the community(ies). The end result of this action to benefit the community is the benefit of each individual. The idealistic thinking of benefiting others as opposed to yourself is what separates Utopian Society.

If you look at the construction of Utopia Z, every household have either farmland or orchard in the north side of the river. It is because in Utopia Z, agriculture is the one of the job which everyone works, with no exceptions. The equality within this society is part of the foundation of the society which help accomplish the goals of work. Also, everybody works at a productive trade, and the result is that they get the work done in a six-hour a day. Whether it be food, supplies, road conditions, or any other improvement of lifestyle, the amount and setup of work in the society can provide for all these. Because everyone contributes, the amount of work required, per person, is small. When there is less work for each member of the community to perform, the opportunity to shrink the average work day arises. This allows for more free time in which the people can pursue their interests. In the other hand, south part of the river, there are some factories, public buildings and very urbanized place. It is very different from the other community because people work for 12 hours without any breaks in the factory. People do not have free time to pursue their happiness. It is very opposite from the other community. But this community is more capitalist and people have efficiency to trade from the other countries. Everyone is busy and much advanced in their lives.

As you can see, the river is in the middle of these two communities. The river is very important for these two communities because water supplies needed in these communities and it helps in variety ways. It can help to have a great plantation and one of energy sources for the factories.

In conclusion, Utopia Z is a very efficient, self-maintained unit, and can supply the citizens with all neccessary living needs. Although Utopia Z, supplies all the citizens with sufficient amounts of
food, it also supplies water to them.

Assignment #1

Through The Geography of Slavery, I noticed how slaves might lived their lives and why would they escaped.

I found 3 examples of Ads on escaped slaves.  I have found these ads by browse the Ads and looked for the local as Virginia and fairfax county, fairfax. It was very interesting because it happened in our local place and there were many slaves who were escaped from their “master”.

1. Virginia Gazette (parks), Williamsburg, From May 2 to May 9, 1745

“Servant Woman, named Isabella Pierce: of a middle stature, thin Visage, limps with her right Leg, which if examin’d, will appear to be a large Scar on each Side of the Ankle of her said Leg: She has stole from the Subscriber two Gold Rings, a Silver Stock-buckel, and about six pounds cash.”

I was wondering why she would have scars on her body and limps her leg. I assumed that she had tough life with her master. I would imagine her master was abusing her and she could not handle that abusiveness so she might thought of running away. Or I can assume that she tried to run away couple of times and she failed so her master abused her leg so she limps.

2. Maryland Gazette (Green), Annapolis, June 21, 1745

This example of slave is same slave as first one. I guess they kept failed to find Isabella Pierce, so Subscriber decided to raise the reward price, which was very interesting.
3. Virginia Gazette (Rind),  Williamsburg, May 12, 1768.

It was about Negro Man named Jack Yarmouth, about 40 years old, a low squat made fellow he has lost two of his fore teeth, and is by trade a gardener.

As the first one, I would imagine with this one too that he is also abused by the master?! I can’t think of anything with positiveness.

I believe these ads and the Wikipedia articles tell  us that so much information or beyond about slaves and how they lived and the relationships with masters. I got so much ideas from these Ads, because with description on slaves, how they dressed and description on physical explained so much. Wikipedia articles on Slavery was explained about what they were working on and even children were working for the masters. I believe slavery is just sad and terrible thing that happened in history.
